Is This Your Year for Audio Books?

reel to reel tape, razor blade and splicing block, Sandy Weaver Carman, audio book, audio product, audio production, podcast, writer, author, speaker, trainer, coach, Voicework On DemandAudio books used to be clunky and hard to use. They were mainly used by visually impaired people, and those of us who drove long distances, often by ourselves, for work or for play. Boxes of cassettes littered the floorboard, some of them spewing the delicate tape out with tangled abandon, never to play again. Then CD technology came along, making audio books easier to “read” but very expensive.

Welcome to 2014 – this ain’t your mama’s audio book anymore! Continue reading Is This Your Year for Audio Books?

Audio Products & the Importance of Treating Your Voice Right!

image of a professional microphone, audio, audio books, audio products, Sandy Weaver Carman, Voicework on DemandUsing your voice properly and effectively while speaking and recording is important in order to convey an air of authority. It’s also important so that you can make it to the end of the speech – heck, sometimes just to the end of the sentence! – without running out of breath support for your words.

Breathing the right way is the same for recording as it is for Continue reading Audio Products & the Importance of Treating Your Voice Right!

Audio Books – The New Go-To for Readers

photo of ear, Sandy Weaver Carman, Voicework on Demand, audio products, audio learning, audio books, audio book, writer, speaker, trainer, coach, authorTake out your phone and look at it. Does it do more than take and make calls, text and double as a camera? If you have a smart phone, you are in the American majority now.

According to an article in AdAge, this year 56.8% of Americans are using smart phones, and that number is projected to be nearly 80% by 2017. We rely on our phones for so much more than just calls, texts and picture-taking. We research on them, shop on them, and increasingly, people are using them to read books. But the way we’re reading those books is changing dramatically. Continue reading Audio Books – The New Go-To for Readers

When Your Major Tool Breaks – What Then?

p>What do you do when you run a business and the major tool you use in your business breaks. What happens then?

Perhaps you’re a speaker, trainer or coach – your major tool is your ability to get up in front of people and present.image of a professional microphone, audio, audio books, audio products, Sandy Weaver Carman, Voicework on Demand

Perhaps you’re a writer – your major tool is your ability to craft meaningful, beautiful sentences.

Or perhaps you’re like me, and you do voicework – your major tool would be your voice.

My major tool has been on the fritz for the past week. I went on a business trip to Savannah and came home to a sick hubby. Darling man that he is, he shared his bad cold with me. I do love that man – truly!

Right now, my sound is somewhere between Lauren Bacall and a frog. Not a great sound, unless you have a cartoon client who wants something like that. Unfortunately for me and cartoon producers the world over, they haven’t found me at the right time.

Entrepreneurs and solopreneurs know that there’s always plenty to keep you busy when running a business, even if you don’t have your major tool. Administrivia, marketing and working on a web site have kept me occupied while trying to best this bug. And for the clients with ASAP jobs, I’ve done the best I could, with promises for free re-do’s when my voice actually sounds like me again!

What do you do when your major tool breaks? That’s something you should think about right now, while all is well in your business. Draw up a contingency plan, have some ideas of things that could get taken care of even when you’re not hitting on all eight cylinders, and put your ideas down on paper.

I hope your major tool never breaks, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared!

Do you have a question about audio products? I’d love to hear it, and maybe answer it right here. Helping people monetize their content is what we do!

Audio Production – Evolution of an Art Form

Audio production – since 1877, when Charles Cros discovered that sound could be reproduced from a recording, people – ok, geeks like me! – have been in love with the art and science of working with audio. One hundred years after Charles made audio production possible, I began working with audio as part of my first job in radio.

In 1977, audio production tools were quarter-inch magnetic tape, a reel-to-reel recorder, a splicing block, a single-edged razor blade and a grease pencil. Continue reading Audio Production – Evolution of an Art Form
